I decided to play with another style a bit. This frog was done in Dark Umber colored pencil and shaded in Photoshop. Let me know your thoughts... yay or nay? :)

I like this technique better. You might be onto something here. Maybe play with the shading. I've tried the opposite before. Colored flats on the computer, printed it out and then added colored pencils. Doesn't work very well. If you want to try another technique, take some tracing paper, draw line work on the front, color flats in on the back and then add shading to the front line work. Turns out well. Maybe buy a thinker paper and use watercolor.

Btw, great choice of music. The Pink Panther is the first cartoon character I can remember drawing as a kid. I never had a pink crayon, so I'd shade the character in lightly with red. Everyone who saw it made comments like "Who's this, Pink Panthers little brother, Red Panther?" It mad me so mad! Everyone knows Pink Panther was an only child! Sheesh.

I will have to try those other techniques. I really like to work in colored pencil and acrylic washes on illo board, but I've been trying to get some gigs working for a children's book publisher that has a fast turnaround. Using my traditional method (before this blog was started) an illustration would have taken me about 6-8 hours or more. The digitals are a fraction of that. Sooo... I'm trying to find a way to get the look of my original work with a much faster turnaround on production. I still plan on doing my lengthy-er pieces... but will reserve those for higher paying gigs.

I agree on the Pink Panther. The guy in the office close to me has a turntable and a great selection of records. Makes for some very fun afternoons of music.

My crayon trick was mixing lightly shaded blue and yellow to make green. I always seemed to run out of the green first as it was my favorite color. :)
